Ukrainian Canadian Archives & Museum of Alberta
The UCAMA museum in downtown Edmonton provided a unique opportunity to investigate the interaction of a historic structure and a modern museum. The design focused on the spatial organization of the three component parts (exhibition, library and archive) within the remnants of the retained brick walls.
It was imperative to the design that the embodied memory of the existing building was revealed to the visitors as they moved within the building to reinforce the sense of place and history that the completed design represents.
The building is open and inviting while providing intimate areas for reflection and public spaces for celebration. The design was the recipient of a Canadian Architect Award of Merit 2006 and a City of Edmonton Urban Design Award 2009.
