Sir Winston Churchill Square
Churchill Square is Edmonton’s central meeting place which hosts a wide range of festivals and informal events every day of the year. As the “living room of the city” it needed to accomodate world class functions and also provide soft spaces for a break from the bustle of urban life. HIP’s design, in collaboration with Stastny Brun Architects, features an expansive hardscaped urban plaza as the central point of the surrounding arts district. Linkages to the plaza are integrated into uniquely programmed areas including natural gardens, formal gardens, and leasable venues that open onto the square and add to the vitality of the space. A shaded grass area and seating arbours along the east side provide more intimate gathering space in contrast to the open plaza. A large water feature in front of city hall attracts the community for a cooling swim in the summer or a skate in the winter months. Sir Winston Churchill Square has become one of Edmonton’s most valuable public venues and has proven itself to be well suited to the wide range of demands it faces. The project was awarded an Edmonton Urban Design Award of Excellence in 2005.
