Grey Nuns Hospital

HIP Architects designed a 500 bed prototypical hospital which could be built at four locations between Edmonton and Calgary. Due to the downturn in expected growth for the two cities only one hospital was planned for both locations. The Edmonton hospital, located in the Millwoods community, was given to the Edmonton General.
The H shaped configuration of the plan is a very rational and organized approach for a hospital of this size. All patient care and support are located in the basement or on the main or second floors. Prior to construction some customization of department capacity and layout was done to the prototype. In Edmonton’s case, the 28 bed psychiatry unit was expanded to a 70 bed unit.
In 2008 HIP added an ambulatory support building to relocate clinic, office and outpatient services which expanded the capacity of the main building for critical medical functions.
