Commonwealth Community Recreation Centre
The City of Edmonton and Edmonton Eskimos’ vision to build a freestanding field house for the Eskimos and to expand the existing community recreation facility was a major undertaking intended to not only improve existing infrastructure but also to catalyze a community revitalization. Through an initial master planning exercise, HIP Architects and their joint venture partner MJM, proposed an integrated facility that combined a field house, fitness centre, pool, and the Eskimos administration. The forecourt to the facility frames an open public plaza, which is a valuable amenity to the area. The large sculptural forms of the building create an imposing gesture that respects the iconic form of the stadium, but also connects well with the human scale of the plaza. Phasing of the various components was required to meet differing schedules. This was achieved through detailed consultation of contractor, client and design team.
