Alberta Cardiovascular and Stroke Research Centre
The ABACUS is a dedicated research facility that contains specialist imaging technology, a vascular biology area, clinical trial zone and associated exam and support spaces.
The location of the facility required the adoption of two principal entrances and the organization of the department along two primary circulation routes. The design intent was to create a compelling environment that separates the clinical / non clinical spaces and public and private areas to a front and back of house arrangement.
The public interface is designed to be therapeutic and welcoming to assure patients and make them feel comfortable. The clinical areas are designed to foster research and dialogue between staff. This high degree of interactivity and collegiality was necessary to create the desired environment where staff and patients felt at ease and could communicate openly.
Technically the project required the integration of highly specialized diagnostic imaging equipment including nuclear imaging and magnetic guidance.
